The Montessori Toddler Room is a small section of the Big room. The classroom is set up to accommodate walking toddlers from the age of 18 months. The furniture in the classroom is put on low shelves and includes small tables, chairs and mats. There is lovely cosy area for the book corner, a Practical life area, a sensorial area, language and maths area.
The toddlers will follow the basic Montessori Curriculum and will be guided by Montessori assistants (adult helpers) to follow their interests and developmental needs.
The toddlers will be encouraged to work with the materials that they are interested in.
The dressing frames in the practical life will help the toddlers gain independence. Classified pictures and objects will help the children develop their language needs and puzzles and other activities, will help with hand eye co-ordination and early cognitive development.
Regular cooking / art and craft activities happen during the week. Outdoor work and outside play is a daily event.
Snack time in the toddler room is a group event. During this time the children help cut the snack, are encouraged to pour their own drinks and choose the snack they want to eat. Flowers are placed on the table and classical music is played in the classroom.
Most toddlers will move to the 3-6 environment during the term before their third birthday.
